Zurich Classic of New Orleans Offers Unique Betting Opportunities on PGA TOUR

Published by BetMGM, April 20, 2023

This week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans presents a distinct betting experience on the PGA TOUR, as it’s the only team event on the schedule. The tournament will feature alternating formats of Four-balls (best ball) and Foursomes (alternate shot), with the first and third rounds in Four-ball and the second and final rounds in Foursomes.

The team format introduces unique variables when it comes to handicapping, but bettors at the BetMGM online sportsbook have a clear consensus favorite. As of Wednesday, the team of Will Zalatoris and Sahith Theegala has drawn a substantial 24.8% of the handle on 16.3% of the tickets. Their odds opened at +1000 and have since dropped to +800. This pairing features two of the best iron players on the PGA TOUR, both seeking their second career victories. According to BetMGM’s Tristan Davis,

“Punters are betting into Theegala and Zalatoris like they have already won, as they have been by far the most popular duo as of now.”

Theegala is coming off a solo second-place finish at the RBC Heritage and has five top-10 finishes this season. Zalatoris, who returned this season following back surgery last April, has three top-10s in nine starts.

The team of Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, who won the Zurich Classic in 2022, is the second-most popular with 19.2% of the handle on 15.1% of the tickets. Schauffele has seven top-10s in 10 starts this season, while Cantlay is coming off a T3 at the RBC Heritage, his best finish this year. The two also have extensive team experience, having been paired together in past Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups.

Other notable teams include:

  • Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry (+750)
  • The Canadian duo of Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin (+2500, down from +4000), who finished second a year ago and could showcase themselves as a potential Presidents Cup pairing.
