World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler Leads Masters After Rollercoaster Third Round
April 8, 2023 – World number one Scottie Scheffler will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the 2023 Masters Tournament at Augusta National. In a thrilling third day of play, Scheffler carded a 71 to finish the day at 7-under par, one shot ahead of fellow American Collin Morikawa, who shot a 69, one of only two rounds under 70 on Saturday.
- Max Homa sits two shots back of Scheffler after a 73, while Swedish rookie Ludvig Aberg, who turned professional just 10 months ago, is one shot further behind. No player has ever won the Masters on their major championship debut, but the 24-year-old Aberg has defied the odds since joining the paid ranks, winning on both the DP World Tour and PGA Tour, and helping Europe regain the Ryder Cup in Rome.
Aberg and fellow Ryder Cup teammate Nicolai Hojgaard both have a chance to become the first player since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979 to win on their Masters debut. Hojgaard briefly held the outright lead with a hat-trick of birdies on the 8th hole, but then bogeyed the next five holes and will start the final round five shots off the pace.
Defending champion Jon Rahm admitted to having a “sour feeling” after a 72 left him 5-over for the tournament, effectively ending his chances of retaining the title. Meanwhile, Tiger Woods struggled to a career-worst 82, while Rory McIlroy’s hopes of completing the career Grand Slam also faded with a 71, leaving him 3-over.
Scheffler, who has form figures of 1-1-2 coming into the week, said, “I feel like my game is in a good spot and has been for a while. Major championships are always very challenging, and it’s nice having a lead going into tomorrow. The eagle on 13 was extremely important.“
With the final round set to be played on Sunday, the stage is set for an exciting conclusion to the 2023 Masters Tournament.
