Collin Morikawa, the rising golf star, has been making a series of equipment changes that have contributed to his recent success on the PGA TOUR. Despite the adjustments, the young player has managed to secure back-to-back top-three finishes, showcasing his adaptability and creativity.
At the recent Masters tournament, Morikawa switched to a TaylorMade Qi10 LS 9-degree driver, replacing his older SIM model that he had been using for most of the year. He also opted for a TaylorMade Qi10 core-model 3-wood with 13.5 degrees of loft and a TaylorMade “MySymbol” TP5x No. 5 golf ball, which features a distinctive numeric aesthetic reminiscent of a baseball uniform.
“I used to hit my P-770 on a string, but sometimes the distance would be a little unpredictable,” Morikawa explained. “This one launches a touch higher, and I feel I can predict the distance better. I know Rory replaced his P-760 with it. I’m liking it so far.”
The most intriguing equipment change, however, is the introduction of a “Proto” 4-iron in Morikawa’s bag. This new club from TaylorMade has not been officially announced, leaving equipment enthusiasts wondering whether it’s an upgrade to an older model or a completely new offering.
Morikawa and fellow PGA TOUR player Rory McIlroy, who will team up with Shane Lowry at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, both had the “Proto” 4-iron as the only one in their bags during Tuesday’s practice round for the event.
