In a commanding display of golf prowess, Scottie Scheffler cemented his status as the pre-tournament favorite by clinching his second Masters title in just three years at the prestigious Augusta National. The world’s number one player carded a closing round of 68 to finish 11 under par, four shots clear of Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg. England’s Tommy Fleetwood, two-time major winner Collin Morikawa, and Max Homa rounded out the top five, three strokes further back.
Scheffler’s nerves were put to the test as his rivals stumbled around Amen Corner, but the 24-year-old responded with a magnificent display, showcasing his enormous potential on his major debut. Aberg, who only turned professional in June last year, had been impressive in his own right, winning on the DP World Tour, helping Europe regain the Ryder Cup, and tasting victory on the PGA Tour before the end of the season.
Scheffler’s brilliant form in 2024 had seen him win the Arnold Palmer Invitational by five shots and become the first player to secure back-to-back Players Championship titles. This dominant run of performances led to Scheffler being installed as the pre-tournament favorite, a position he fully justified with his commanding performance.
Despite a brief stumble on the fourth and seventh holes, Scheffler regained control of the tournament, delivering a series of clutch birdies to pull away from the chasing pack. Aberg and Morikawa both encountered costly errors, allowing Scheffler to extend his lead and ultimately seal his second Masters title in style.
Tiger Woods, playing in his 100th round at the Masters, struggled throughout the week, recording his worst score at the tournament by four shots. The 15-time major champion will now turn his attention to the remaining majors of the year, as he continues his comeback from injury.
Rory McIlroy’s quest to complete the career grand slam was once again thwarted, as he finished tied for 22nd, while defending champion Jon Rahm had to settle for a distant 45th-place finish.
