Rory McIlroy Dismisses Shock LIV Golf Move Rumor

World No. 2 golfer Rory McIlroy has swiftly refuted a report suggesting he was on the verge of a surprise switch to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf league. In a recent interview with Golf Channel, which he later shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the Northern Irishman categorically denied the claims.

The London-based financial newspaper City AM had reported over the weekend that McIlroy, a vocal critic of the LIV Golf breakaway, was about to join the circuit in a deal worth a staggering $850 million (£680 million). However, McIlroy’s manager, Sean O’Flaherty, dismissed the report as “fake news.”

When asked about the rumor ahead of this week’s RBC Heritage tournament, McIlroy expressed bewilderment at the origins of the speculation.

“I honestly don’t know how these things get started,” he said. “I’ve never been offered a number from LIV, and I’ve never contemplated going to LIV.”

The four-time major champion reaffirmed his commitment to the PGA Tour, stating, “My future is here on the PGA Tour and it’s never been any different.” While acknowledging that other players have had conversations with LIV Golf, McIlroy made it clear that such discussions have never been a consideration for him.

  • “It’s unfortunate we have to deal with it, and this is the state that our game’s in, but I’m obviously here today, playing this PGA Tour event, and I will play the PGA Tour for the rest of my career,” he concluded.

McIlroy’s firm stance against the LIV Golf venture has been a consistent theme during the ongoing saga surrounding the breakaway league. His unwavering loyalty to the PGA Tour underscores his belief in the long-term sustainability and integrity of the game’s premier tour.
