BBC Golf: Rory McIlroy Prevails in Thrilling Scottish Open Finish
Rory McIlroy emerged victorious at the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open, held at the Renaissance Club, after an incredible birdie-birdie finish on the 17th and 18th holes. The PGA Tour and DP World Tour once again co-sanctioned the prestigious event.
McIlroy, the defending champion, beat out Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre, who fired the low round of the day with a 64 to put pressure on the leaders. Tom Kim and Tommy Fleetwood were the closest competitors to McIlroy heading into Sunday, but they were unable to mount a serious challenge as the Northern Irishman cruised to the win.
This marks McIlroy’s first start since his recent showing at the U.S. Open, where he faltered down the stretch. Meanwhile, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is sitting this one out after finishing T3 at the event last year. Other top players in the field include Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, and Ludvig Åberg, as well as Justin Thomas, who will be hoping to improve on his previous course history.

The Renaissance Club, designed by Tom Doak and featuring fescue grass from tee to green, is set to provide a stern test for the golfers, with the wind and weather expected to be key factors. With five years of tournament data available, the focus will be on driving distance, par 3 scoring, strokes gained on approach from various distances, and around-the-green performance.
