June 20, 2023 – In a groundbreaking move, the PGA Tour has awarded Tiger Woods a lifetime exemption to compete in all of its prestigious signature events, starting next year. This decision, made by the PGA Tour policy board, is a testament to Woods’ unparalleled achievements on the golf course.
The new sponsor exemption, established specifically to honor Woods’ remarkable accomplishment of surpassing 80 career PGA Tour victories, will grant the 48-year-old golfing legend the opportunity to participate in all eight of the tour’s elite tournaments for the remainder of his career. This privilege does not extend to major championships.
Woods, who currently holds the record for most overall PGA Tour wins, with 82, and ranks second in major championship victories with 15, has had a limited playing schedule in recent years due to various injuries. Since his devastating car accident in February 2021, which required extensive surgery, Woods has only competed in nine tournaments.
“Among his 82 career wins, Woods won the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard eight times and the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday five times. Both are Signature Events,” the PGA Tour memo stated, highlighting the significant impact Woods has had on the sport.
