Hadwin Leads Memorial Tournament as Scheffler and Schauffele Chase
In a captivating start to the Memorial Tournament, Canadian Adam Hadwin found himself atop the leaderboard after the opening round, carding an impressive six-under-par 66. The world number one Scottie Scheffler and US PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele closely trailed, sitting just one and two shots back, respectively.
Hadwin’s round featured eight birdies and two bogeys, including a blemish on the final hole. Meanwhile, Scheffler, the current world number one, recorded six birdies and a single bogey, trailing Hadwin by just one stroke. Schauffele, the third-place finisher, matched Scheffler’s six-under-par performance and shared the spot with Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg, Canadian Corey Connors, and American Collin Morikawa.
“When the ball was in the air, I closed my eyes. I wouldn’t call myself religious, but I was hoping that thing was going to be OK. If I didn’t make some of the putts I needed to today, it would have been like a two over probably, or worse,” emphasized Schauffele, reflecting on the importance of his putting.
Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy experienced an up-and-down day, managing to salvage his round with four birdies on the last six holes after encountering two bogeys and a costly double-bogey on the 12th hole, ultimately finishing four shots off the lead. England’s Tommy Fleetwood, meanwhile, carded a more consistent round, recording four birdies and a single bogey, sitting one shot ahead of McIlroy.
