The legendary golfer Tiger Woods has accepted a special exemption to compete in the 124th U.S. Open Championship, set to take place at Pinehurst in North Carolina from June 13th to 16th. This announcement was made by the United States Golf Association (USGA) on Thursday.

In a statement, Woods expressed his honor and excitement at the opportunity to participate in this year’s U.S. Open, a tournament that has been instrumental in defining his illustrious career. The three-time U.S. Open champion, who won the coveted title in 2000, 2002, and 2008, will be making his 23rd appearance in the prestigious event.

“The U.S. Open, our national championship, is a truly special event for our game and one that has helped define my career,” said Woods. “I’m honored to receive this exemption and could not be more excited for the opportunity to compete in this year’s U.S. Open, especially at Pinehurst, a venue that means so much to the game.”

The USGA’s chief championships officer, John Bodenhamer, emphasized the significance of Woods’ presence in the tournament, stating that “the story of the U.S. Open could not be written without Tiger Woods.” Bodenhamer highlighted Woods’ remarkable achievements, including his 15-stroke victory at Pebble Beach in 2000 and his inspiring triumph on a broken leg at Torrey Pines in 2008, which have undoubtedly made this decision an easy one for the special exemption committee.

The 48-year-old golf legend, who has a total of 12 major championships and 82 PGA Tour victories to his name, will be looking to add to his impressive U.S. Open legacy at the renowned Pinehurst Resort. His inclusion in the field is sure to heighten the excitement and anticipation surrounding this year’s U.S. Open.
