Scottie Scheffler’s Remarkable Journey to Golf Dominance
Witness Scottie Scheffler’s extraordinary rise from a Ryder Cup wild card to golf supremacy, with praise from Rory McIlroy and his recent Masters and Memorial Tournament victories.
Scheffler Credits Ryder Cup Teammates for Transformation into Golf’s Dominant Force
Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked golfer, has credited his Ryder Cup teammates for helping transform him from a player without a PGA Tour victory into golf’s dominant force. The 27-year-old won the Masters for the second time in three years in April and heads into this week’s 124th US Open at Pinehurst fresh off his fifth victory of the year at the Memorial Tournament.
Scheffler’s meteoric rise to the top of the game has not gone unnoticed, with Rory McIlroy freely admitting that the American is “undoubtedly the best player in the world at the minute by a long way.” The Northern Irishman was not alone in lavishing praise on Scheffler during pre-tournament press conferences for the BBC’s golf coverage.
“I always look back on being selected for my first Ryder Cup team, of kind of having the vote of some of the guys,” Scheffler said. “I wasn’t really a proven player out here yet. I hadn’t won on Tour. I got the vote of some of my peers to be on that team and was able to perform well. So that’s something that I always look back on and am very grateful for.”
Scheffler’s gratitude towards his peers is a testament to the camaraderie within the professional golf ranks. As he prepares to tee it up at the WGC-Dell Match Play 2023, the world number one insists he doesn’t feel like he has a “target on my back,” emphasizing that each golfer starts the tournament on even par, regardless of their recent successes.
