Rory McIlroy Fires Flawless 65 to Lead BBC Golf’s US Open Coverage

In a triumphant start to his quest for a long-awaited fifth major title, world-class golfer Rory McIlroy delivered a scintillating opening round of 65 at the 124th US Open. The Northern Irishman’s blemish-free performance saw him share the lead with Patrick Cantlay at five under par.

Two days after reconciling with his wife Erica and dismissing a recent divorce petition, McIlroy outshone his playing partners, Masters champion Scottie Scheffler and US PGA winner Xander Schauffele, who carded 71 and 70 respectively.

“My short game was good early on,” the three-time US Open champion commented. “It was a really controlled round of golf.”

The world number three wasted no time in making his mark, carding birdies on the 4th, 5th, 10th, 16th, and 18th holes. McIlroy’s short game prowess was on full display, as he chipped in from off the green on the 5th hole and executed several impressive up-and-downs.

Compatriot Ludvig Aberg, making his US Open debut, was just one shot off the lead after a superb 66, while Bryson DeChambeau and Matthieu Pavon sat two shots back on three under par. Pavon’s round included a pair of impressive eagles on the 5th and 10th holes.

The day proved a struggle for 15-time major winner Tiger Woods, who opened with a 74 in what he had predicted would be a “war of attrition.” The 48-year-old veteran made a birdie on his first hole but was unable to maintain that momentum.

With Rory McIlroy’s flawless start, the stage is set for an enthralling chapter in the BBC Golf’s coverage of the 2023 US Open.
