Updated: April 12, 2023

In a recent interview at the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage event, Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy firmly denied rumors that he is close to accepting an offer to join the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit. McIlroy, a 24-time PGA Tour winner, stated that he has never been offered a specific contract figure from LIV Golf and has no intention of leaving the PGA Tour.

Speaking to Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis, McIlroy addressed a report from the London-based newspaper City A.M. that claimed he would receive an $850 million contract and two percent equity in LIV Golf to leave the PGA Tour. McIlroy categorically denied the validity of these rumors, saying,

“I honestly don’t know how these things get started. I’ve never been offered a number from LIV, and I’ve never contemplated going to LIV.”

McIlroy, who has been a vocal advocate for the PGA Tour during the ongoing divide in men’s professional golf, reiterated his loyalty to the PGA Tour, stating,

“My future is here on the PGA Tour, and it’s never been any different.”

The four-time major champion acknowledged that while he does not judge players who have chosen to join the Saudi-backed circuit, his personal path remains firmly with the PGA Tour.

The Northern Irishman’s stance on the division in golf has evolved in recent months, with McIlroy now calling for the unification of the sport on a global stage. As negotiations between the PGA Tour and the Saudi Arabian PIF continue to stall, McIlroy has expressed that the current state of the game is “not sustainable” and that the two parties must work towards a finalized deal.

McIlroy is set to tee it up at the Harbour Town Golf Links this week, fresh off a T22 finish at the Masters Tournament. His unwavering commitment to the PGA Tour and his desire to see the game move forward in a unified manner underscores his enduring influence as a leading figure in the world of professional golf.
