Scottish golfer Robert MacIntyre, making his first appearance as a PGA Tour member at the PGA Championship, finds himself in a familiar position – tied for fourth place after an opening-round 5-under 66 at Valhalla Golf Club.
The left-handed MacIntyre, who hails from the windswept town of Oban in the Scottish Highlands, has long been accustomed to adapting to ever-changing conditions on the links courses of his homeland. However, the transition to the PGA Tour lifestyle has proven more challenging than expected for the 27-year-old.
“The weeks are long. The stakes are high. Many players keep to themselves,” MacIntyre acknowledged, drawing a stark contrast to the camaraderie he experienced on the DP World Tour (formerly European Tour), where he earned his PGA Tour card.
But a recent three-week trip back home to Scotland proved to be the reset button MacIntyre needed.
“I got three weeks at home and hardly touched the golf clubs, done some stupid stuff and just enjoyed myself,” he explained. “I’m in a good mind frame after getting home to Scotland.”
The rejuvenated MacIntyre carried that positive energy into his opening round at the PGA Championship, carding a clean scorecard with five birdies. His ability to adapt to the conditions and find his rhythm was on full display, reminiscent of his past success on the European amateur circuit.
“When I can be around friends, family, people closest to me, people that actually care about me, they speak to me as Bob the human rather than Bob the golfer,” MacIntyre said. “I think that’s when I’m at my happiest, when I’m not talking about golf, golf, golf.”
As the PGA Championship progresses, MacIntyre will look to maintain this newfound balance and mentality that has him firmly in contention early on.
