Matsuyama carded an impressive nine birdies at the Riviera Country Club, overcoming a six-shot deficit to overnight leader Patrick Cantlay and finishing the tournament at 17 under par. The former Masters champion showcased his prowess, particularly on the back nine, where he birdied three consecutive holes to move into a five-way tie for the lead.
The highlight of Matsuyama’s round came on the 15th hole, where he hit his approach shot to within eight inches of the cup. He followed that up with an equally impressive tee shot on the next hole, further solidifying his position at the top of the leaderboard.
“I wasn’t striking the ball really well, but my chipping and putting was working a lot this week,” Matsuyama said through an interpreter. “Especially the second shot on 15 was one of the best I had. That really helped.”
Despite a late charge from Cantlay, who sank a 50-foot birdie putt on the 18th, Matsuyama’s impressive performance proved too much to overcome. The Japanese star, who had slipped to 55th in the world rankings, recaptured his winning form, delivering a timely boost ahead of his return to Augusta National for the Masters.
Matsuyama’s triumph was followed by a tie for second place between Will Zalatoris and Luke List, who both finished the tournament at 14 under par. England’s Tommy Fleetwood rounded out the top 10, while Rory McIlroy finished in a tie for 24th.
