Former champion Danny Willett made a remarkable return to the golf scene, competing in the Masters tournament despite undergoing shoulder surgery just seven months ago. Willett’s impressive comeback was marked by a superb opening round of 68, showcasing his resilience and determination.
Willett, who won the Masters in 2016, had feared he would be sidelined for at least a year following the September surgery. However, he recovered sufficiently to make a surprise appearance at the prestigious event, where he comfortably made the halfway cut and finished in a tie for 45th place, alongside defending champion Jon Rahm.
The 36-year-old golfer was level par for 17 holes in the extremely challenging conditions of the second round, but a triple bogey on the 18th hole was the only blemish on an otherwise strong performance.
Speaking to the PA news agency, Willett expressed his satisfaction with his performance, stating, “Mentally it’s been really tough this week and maybe a little bit of that came in towards the end. But the body feels good, shoulder feels really strong, so now I’ve got another seven weeks off to go and do the work that we need to do to progress before we come back properly.”
The Englishman’s comeback was even more remarkable given the fact that he competed alongside two golfers who had won on the PGA Tour this year, Austin Eckroat and Stephan Jaeger. Willett acknowledged that he didn’t feel “leaps and bounds behind them,” further highlighting his impressive form.
Despite the temptation to add more tournaments to his schedule, Willett’s focus remains on his long-term recovery plan. He is currently scheduled to compete in the European Open in Hamburg in seven weeks, and his management team will carefully assess his medical status before making any decisions about additional events.
Willett’s presence at the Masters and his strong performance have undoubtedly inspired golf enthusiasts, and his continued progress will be closely watched as he aims to recapture the form that earned him the coveted green jacket in 2016.
