In the early stages of the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst, Patrick Cantlay has charged to the top of the leaderboard, shooting a blistering first-round 65 to sit at 5-under par. The 32-year-old has never been in the top five following the opening round of a major championship, but his superb performance on Thursday has placed him in prime position.
Cantlay’s previous best finish at a major was a T3 at the 2019 PGA Championship, while his best result at the U.S. Open was a T14 in 2022 and 2023. However, the Californian’s ball-striking and putting were on full display, as he recorded a bogey-free 31 on the back nine, with four birdies in his final five holes.

Young Swede Åberg Impresses in Maiden U.S. Open
Chasing Cantlay is the 24-year-old Swedish sensation Ludvig Åberg, who carded a 4-under 66 in his maiden U.S. Open appearance. Åberg, who finished runner-up at this year’s Masters, was flawless off the tee and dialed in with his approach shots, hitting 14 of 14 fairways and 16 of 18 greens in regulation.
