Max Homa’s Near Masters Triumph and Heartwarming Gesture at RBC Heritage

The PGA TOUR Staff reported last week’s Masters presented Max Homa with his best chance yet to clinch his inaugural major title. Homa, who had only one top-10 major finish prior to the tournament, commenced the final round in third place, trailing leader Scottie Scheffler by a mere two strokes.
Homa found himself in a four-way tie for the lead after carding a birdie on the eighth hole and continued to apply pressure on Scheffler with another birdie at the 10th. However, Homa’s chances were all but dashed when his tee shot on the 12th hole ricocheted into the bushes behind the green, resulting in a double-bogey. Homa ultimately shot a 73 on Sunday, finishing third, seven shots behind Scheffler.
“I handled my nerve really well,” Homa remarked during his pre-tournament press conference at the RBC Heritage. “I dealt with a lot of expectations and didn’t let that affect my golf game too much. I had never been in a position of being in contention going into a Sunday — a Saturday, any of those days really. It was fun to wake up for a couple days and think, there’s a pretty decent chance I might be wearing a green jacket on Sunday and to still excel and feel good about my golf.”
Though Homa left Augusta National without a coveted green jacket, he did receive a consolation prize in the form of a free meal at Chick-Fil-A. As Homa was exiting the area, a woman in the drive-thru line recognized him and decided to cover the cost of his order.
“She said that her son is 3 or 4 and I’m his favorite golfer, so it was pretty cool,” Homa recounted. “I don’t know, those kinds of things I still pinch myself. … She paid for it, I rolled my window down, we chatted for a minute or so, and then I ate it. It was kind. I just pinch myself at times with the kindness people have given me just because I play some golf. I feel very fortunate for that.”
