Pinehurst, N.C. Recap: Tiger Woods Misses the Cut at 2023 U.S. Open

In a disappointing outcome, golfing icon Tiger Woods failed to make the cut at the 2023 U.S. Open held at Pinehurst No. 2 this past weekend. After finishing 7-over-par in the opening rounds, the 15-time major champion expressed uncertainty about the longevity of his U.S. Open participation.

“As far as my last Open Championship or U.S. Open Championship, I don’t know what that is. It may or may not be.”

Woods, who has struggled to regain consistent form following his ankle fusion surgery last year, stated. The 48-year-old golfer has been limited in his PGA Tour appearances this season, citing ongoing back issues that prevent him from increasing his competitive schedule.

Despite feeling that he “played well enough to be up there in contention,” Woods ultimately fell two shots short of making the cut, carding a second-round 73. Reflecting on his performance, the golfing legend acknowledged his frustration, stating:

“Granted, my ball-striking and felt like my putting was good enough to be in contention, and I’m not. Yes, it is frustrating because I’m not here to have a chance to win on the weekend.”

This missed cut at the 2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play marked Woods’ fourth tournament appearance of the season, following his withdrawal from the Genesis Invitational, a made cut at the Masters, and a missed cut at the PGA Championship. With the Open Championship at Royal Troon looming as his final start of the year, the golf world eagerly awaits to see if the former world No. 1 can regain the form that has made him a three-time U.S. Open champion.
