Golf’s Fractured Calendar Edges Closer to Potential Resolution as PGA Tour Meets with Saudi PIF
Rory McIlroy, a prominent critic of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series, believes progress is being made towards a potential solution to the sport’s ongoing calendar disputes. Senior PGA Tour players are set to meet with representatives from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) in the coming days.
Negotiations between the PGA Tour and PIF have continued for over two years since the launch of the breakaway LIV Golf league. PGA player-director Patrick Cantlay confirmed that a meeting with PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan, who also chairs Premier League club Newcastle, will take place this week. This follows recent discussions between Al-Rumayyan and PGA Tour chairman Jay Monahan, as the two sides explore a possible partnership.
McIlroy, who has been outspoken in his criticism of LIV Golf, expressed cautious optimism about the ongoing talks.
“There’s a really big disconnect between PIF and LIV,” he said. “The closer that we can get to Yasir, PIF and hopefully finalize that investment, that will be a really good thing.”
The Northern Irishman believes PIF, as a sovereign wealth fund, is interested in “investing in smart and secure businesses,” and sees the PGA Tour as a viable long-term investment. While the specifics of any potential agreement remain unclear, any steps towards a more unified golfing calendar would be welcomed after the acrimony of the past few years.
McIlroy acknowledged that LIV Golf is likely to continue for the foreseeable future, but he believes the team format utilized by the series could find a place on the calendar even if a merger goes through.
“They’re big on team golf and they want to see team golf survive in some way on the calendar,” he said.
The golfing world will closely watch the upcoming discussions, hoping that a compromise can be reached that satisfies all parties involved and provides a path towards a more cohesive and harmonious future for the sport.
