Led by another sizzling performance with his putter, the reigning U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark is two rounds away from further cementing his status as a rising star in professional golf. Clark will carry a commanding four-shot lead into the weekend at TPC Sawgrass, the second consecutive event where he has led an elite field at the halfway point in Florida.
Clark’s exceptional play over the first two rounds has made him the first player in Players Championship history to shoot 65 or better in back-to-back rounds at this venue. He is also one of only four men to be 14-under or better through two rounds, joining an exclusive group that includes major champions Greg Norman, Jason Day, and Webb Simpson, all of whom went on to win the title.
Wyndham Clark’s combination of consistent approach play and lights-out putting has been nearly unstoppable so far. He has gained at least three strokes on the field with his putter in each of the first two rounds, a feat matched by only one other player, Sergio Garcia, in the history of this event.

Trailing Clark by four shots is Xander Schauffele, who has been unflappable tee-to-green, gaining more than 13 strokes on the field in that department over the past four rounds at TPC Sawgrass. Nick Taylor, a 35-year-old Canadian, is also in a tie for second, having never before been this prominently positioned through 36 holes at this event.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler managed to card a 69 on Friday despite dealing with a nagging neck injury, extending his remarkable streak of sub-par rounds to start the 2024 season. Rory McIlroy, on the other hand, had a more erratic day, mixing five birdies with four bogeys and a double-bogey.
As Clark seeks to cement his status as one of the game’s rising stars, the stage is set for an exciting weekend at the prestigious Players Championship.
