Englishman Tyrrell Hatton, the World No. 16 golfer, has joined the Saudi-backed LIV Golf league, the organization announced on Tuesday. The move reunites Hatton with his Ryder Cup teammate, the newly signed Jon Rahm, as Hatton becomes the latest high-profile addition to the burgeoning circuit.

Hatton, a six-time winner on the European Tour and one-time PGA Tour champion, will make his LIV debut at the league’s season opener on February 2nd in Mexico. The 32-year-old Englishman is coming off a strong 2023 campaign, ranking 11th on the PGA Tour’s money list.

Coinciding with Hatton’s signing, LIV Golf also revealed the creation of its latest expansion team, Legion XIII, which will be captained by Rahm. Joining Hatton and Rahm on the team is Caleb Surratt, a highly touted NCAA standout and runner-up at the 2022 U.S. Junior Amateur.

As LIV Golf continues to bolster its roster, the battle for golfing supremacy between the upstart league and the established PGA Tour rages on. The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, LIV’s financial backer, has aggressively pursued top talent to strengthen its position, with Rahm’s signing in December being a major coup.

Hatton, known for his consistent performances and occasionally fiery on-course demeanor, represents another significant acquisition for LIV. Despite his impressive career accomplishments, which include three Ryder Cup appearances, the Englishman has yet to capture a major championship, an elusive achievement that may have factored into his decision to join the lucrative LIV circuit.

The ongoing negotiations between LIV and the PGA Tour have captured the golfing world’s attention, with both parties aiming to secure the sport’s future direction. The addition of Hatton, alongside the likes of Rahm and other rising stars, underscores LIV’s determination to establish itself as a formidable force in the game, intensifying the already captivating rivalry between the two entities.
