Golf fans were left disappointed as legendary player Tiger Woods withdrew from the PGA Genesis Invitational in California due to illness. Woods, who was the tournament host this week, made a promising start on Thursday, carding a one-over-par 72 in his first round of an official PGA Tour event since undergoing ankle surgery.
However, the 15-time major champion was unable to maintain his form the following day. After producing a birdie on the first hole, Woods struggled with back spasms and bogeys on the fourth and fifth holes. He eventually called it a day after the sixth hole, leaving him one-over for the round.
Woods, who has had a limited return to professional golf since his car accident in 2021, acknowledged the physical challenges he faces.
“My back was spasming the last couple holes and it was locking up,” he said. “As far as the physical ups and downs, that’s just part of my body, that’s part of what it is. I accept it and accept the challenges.”
The 48-year-old’s withdrawal was a disappointment for fans hoping to see the golfing legend continue his comeback. Woods had previously withdrawn from the third round of the Masters in April due to a recurring heel pain problem, undergoing an operation to address a complication from a previous ankle fracture.
Despite the setback, golf enthusiasts remain hopeful that Woods will be able to regain his form and continue his illustrious career. The PGA Genesis Invitational, which Woods was hosting, will continue without the iconic player, with the top 50 golfers and those within 10 shots of the lead making the halfway cut.
