As the opening round of the 2024 Masters tees off today, all eyes will be on the 48-year-old as he continues his remarkable comeback journey.
Fused ankle and all, Woods is determined to prove he can still contend for the coveted title, despite the lingering physical challenges he has faced.
“If everything comes together, I think I can get one more,” the golfer confidently stated during his pre-tournament news conference earlier this week.
Woods will take to the course at 1:24 p.m. ET, playing alongside Jason Day and Max Homa. His last official tournament appearance was at the Genesis Invitational in February, where he withdrew after 26 holes due to a stomach illness. The Masters will mark his first 72-hole competition since the 2023 tournament, where he made the cut but withdrew before the conclusion of the third round due to a flare-up of plantar fasciitis in his right leg.
Following that event, Woods underwent ankle fusion surgery to address the lingering issues from his near-fatal 2021 single-car crash. Now, the 15-time major champion says he has no ankle pain, but the impact of the injury has extended to other parts of his body.
“The ankle doesn’t hurt anymore. It’s fused. It’s not going anywhere,” Woods explained. “But, the back, the knee — other parts of the body have to take the load of it, and just the endurance capability of walking a long time and being on my feet for a long time.”
Despite the physical challenges, Woods’ competitive spirit remains undiminished. In December, he shared his intention to play competitively “once a month,” with the Masters as the first major of the year. However, the plan has not gone as smoothly as anticipated, with Woods acknowledging he was not fully ready to compete at the Genesis Invitational.
