On a thrilling day at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in Texas, English teenager Kris Kim emerged as the story of the tournament, becoming the youngest player to make the cut on the PGA Tour in 11 years. The 16-year-old, whose mother is former LPGA player Ji-Hyun Suh, carded a superb second-round 67, featuring five birdies and just one bogey on the front nine.
Kim’s seven-under total left him tied for 36th place, securing his place in the weekend action. According to PGA Tour records, he is the fifth-youngest player to ever make the cut on the tour, with the last player to achieve this feat being Guan Tianlang, who was just 14 years old at the 2013 Masters.
“I’m happy. I can’t wait to get started again tomorrow,” said the junior member at Walnut Heath in Surrey. “I’ve enjoyed it so much the last couple days, and being here two more days makes it so much sweeter.”
Kim’s impressive performance came down to the final hole, where he managed a birdie on the par-five to ensure he comfortably made the cut with a shot to spare. “To be honest, it being a par five, it’s pretty helpful, but yeah, there is always going to be nerves when you’re on the cut line,” he added.
While Kim’s heroics stole the spotlight, fellow Englishman Matt Wallace was unable to maintain his overnight lead, despite a second-round 66 that included an eagle on the 324-yard par-four 14th. Texas native Jake Knapp took over the top spot, carding a blistering 64 to move one stroke ahead of Wallace.
