Houston, Texas – March 31, 2024: In a nail-biting conclusion to the 2024 Houston Open, Stephan Jaeger, a 34-year-old German golfer, clinched his maiden PGA Tour victory by outmaneuvering world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. Jaeger’s two-putt par on the final hole sealed the deal, denying Scheffler a chance to become the first player since Dustin Johnson in 2017 to win three consecutive PGA Tour events.
A Tightly Contested Finish
The leaderboard was packed with talent throughout the day, with Jaeger, Scheffler, Alejandro Tosti, Tom Detry, and David Skinns all entering the final round tied at 9-under. The gusty, overcast conditions at Memorial Park made birdies scarce among the leaders, leading to a tense and closely contested finish.
Tosti, the Argentinian rookie, made a spirited charge, saving par on the par-3 15th and then tying Jaeger at 12-under with a two-putt birdie on the par-5 16th. However, a wayward drive and failed up-and-down attempt on the final hole ultimately led to a bogey, dropping him to 11-under and handing the lead to Jaeger.
Scheffler, the world No. 1 seeking his third consecutive victory, remained in close pursuit. After a bogey on the 15th, the Texan bounced back with a two-putt birdie on the par-5 16th, pulling within one shot of Jaeger. However, Jaeger’s steady play, including a series of pars, proved too much for Scheffler, who missed a six-foot birdie putt on the 18th that would have forced a playoff.
“I just tried to stay with him, tried to make some putts. Try to make some birdies. Birdies kind of eluded me on the back nine there. This golf course plays a little difficult, especially if you’re riding around the lead. There’s just so much trouble. I’m super happy with the day,” Jaeger said.
Jaeger’s Breakthrough Victory
This victory marks a significant milestone for Jaeger, who has bounced between the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour since earning his Tour card in 2017. With the help of a new performance coach, Jaeger has added 13 yards to his average driving distance, which has been a key factor in his resurgence. He is now ranked 24th in strokes gained off the tee, a dramatic improvement from his previous ranking of 106th.
Jaeger’s triumph at the Houston Open secures his PGA Tour status through 2026 and earns him a spot in the upcoming Masters tournament.
