Shane Lowry Narrowly Misses Major Championship History at 2023 US PGA Championship
On a captivating day at the 106th US PGA Championship, Ireland’s Shane Lowry narrowly missed out on making major championship history. The 2019 Open champion carded a stunning, bogey-free 62 at Valhalla, just one shot shy of becoming the first player to shoot 61 in a men’s major.
Lowry, currently ranked 168th on the PGA Tour for putting this season, caught fire on the front nine, making four consecutive birdies from the 2nd hole and picking up further shots on the 7th and 9th to reach the turn in just 29 strokes. The 37-year-old continued his sizzling form on the back nine, draining long birdie putts on the 13th and 14th before another from close range on the 17th, setting up a chance at history on the par-5 18th.
“It feels pretty good,” Lowry said. “To be honest I would have liked it if I went one lower, and I’m disappointed to miss it, but I went out with a job to get myself back in the tournament and I did that.” Reflecting on his impressive putting display, the Irishman added: “My God, I did hole a few putts today.”
Lowry’s playing partner, Justin Rose, also caught fire with a 64 to reach 12-under par, the pair feeding off each other’s momentum.
“Rosey and I got off to a great start and we fed off each other,” Lowry commented. “We were egging each other on.”
With the course proving gettable, Lowry remains confident of claiming the Wanamaker Trophy on Sunday:
“It will take a lot of the same [to win] tomorrow, somebody could come from behind as the course is gettable. I’m going to enjoy what I did today and go out tomorrow and fight hard and give my best to win this trophy.”
