Scottie Scheffler’s Arraignment Postponed in PGA Championship Incident
In a surprising twist, the arraignment of world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler on charges stemming from a Friday arrest outside the PGA Championship has been postponed until June 3, according to online court records. Scheffler, who was initially scheduled to face the charges in a Louisville, Ky., courtroom on Tuesday morning, had his request for a delay granted by a district judge.
Scheffler was arrested shortly after 6 a.m. ET on Friday outside Valhalla Golf Club, where the PGA Championship was being held. The backup that led to the incident was caused by a fatal crash earlier that morning, in which a shuttle bus struck and killed a local man working for a tournament vendor.
According to the arrest report, Scheffler attempted to navigate his black Range Rover courtesy car around the traffic when he encountered Detective Bryan Gillis, who tried to stop the vehicle. Scheffler continued forward, allegedly “dragging Detective Gillis to the ground” and causing injuries that required medical attention.
Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, stated that there was a miscommunication, as Scheffler had been instructed to go in and the officer directing traffic was not part of the event’s traffic detail. Despite the delay, Scheffler returned to the course less than an hour before his new tee time of 10:08 a.m. ET and went on to finish the tournament in a tie for eighth place.
The 2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play champion is currently listed in the field for this week’s PGA Tour event, the Charles Schwab Challenge, which begins Thursday at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
