Scottie Scheffler Holds Firm Atop Masters Leaderboard Amid Challenging Conditions
Augusta, GA – April 9, 2023 – Despite the treacherous conditions that made the third round of the Masters Tournament a true test, Scottie Scheffler maintained his composure to retain the solo lead heading into the final day.
Scheffler, the 2022 Masters champion, carded a 1-under 71 to reach 7-under for the tournament, holding a one-shot advantage over Collin Morikawa, who fired a 3-under 69 to climb into solo second place.
“Proud of how I played today,” said Scheffler. “The golf course was extremely challenging, with the greens being very firm and fast. It was a good fight out there.”
Morikawa, seeking his first green jacket, narrowly missed out on matching Scheffler’s score, stating, “Didn’t really make the putts on the back nine, or else I would be even with (Scheffler) or 1-up. It happens. It’s golf.”
The day’s conditions, described by Lucas Glover as “firm and fast,” made birdies a rare commodity, with even the best players in the world struggling to gain any real momentum.
Notable highlights from the day include:
- Max Homa, the 36-hole leader, carded a 1-over 73 but remains in solo third, two shots behind Scheffler.
- Bryson DeChambeau slipped to 3-under after a 75.
- Masters rookie Nicolai Højgaard‘s bid for the lead faltered with five consecutive back-nine bogeys, leaving him five strokes off the pace.
With the championship set to reach its climax on Sunday, Scheffler, Morikawa, and the chasing pack will be aiming to navigate the unique challenges of Augusta National and etch their names in golfing history.
