Rory McIlroy Seeks Strong Performance at The Players Championship as Major Drought Continues
World No. 2 Rory McIlroy acknowledges the importance of a standout showing this week at The Players Championship, as he looks to end his major championship victory drought. McIlroy, who won the event in 2019, is eager to recapture his winning form after a string of middling results on the PGA Tour this season.
The 34-year-old Northern Irishman began 2023 impressively, finishing runner-up at the Dubai Invitational before claiming victory at the Dubai Desert Classic. However, he has since struggled to maintain that momentum, finishing no better than 21st in his last four PGA Tour starts.
With the Masters Tournament – where a triumph would complete his career Grand Slam – looming on the horizon, McIlroy is determined to find his groove at TPC Sawgrass and the upcoming Valero Texas Open.
“They’ve been middle of the road [finishes], 20th places or whatever it is. I’m not missing cuts but, at the same time, with how I’ve driven the golf ball the last three weeks I should be contending in the tournaments that I’ve played,” McIlroy said.
The four-time major champion has been searching for the right swing thoughts to unlock his full potential, particularly with his iron play. While he feels confident with his woods, McIlroy has been working to develop a different mindset for his approach shots.
“I have this amazing feeling with my woods at the minute, but when I try to recreate that feeling with the irons, it starts left and goes further left,” he explained. “I have a swing thought for my woods and I need a different swing thought for my irons, and that’s what I’ve been working on over the last couple days. I feel like every other part of the game is in great shape.”
McIlroy’s recent frustration with his major championship drought was captured in the second season of the Netflix documentary “Full Swing,” as he reacted emotionally to Brooks Koepka’s fifth major triumph at the 2023 PGA Championship.
“Look, I’m under no illusion that the clock is ticking and it has been 10 years since I’ve won one of them, and I’ve had chances, and those just haven’t gone my way,” McIlroy acknowledged. “I just need to keep putting myself in those positions, and sooner or later it’s going to happen.”
As McIlroy prepares for the challenges ahead, he remains determined to rediscover the form that made him one of the game’s dominant players. A strong performance this week at The Players Championship could be the catalyst he needs to end his major drought and complete his career Grand Slam at Augusta National.
