Rory McIlroy Seeks Masters Glory After Vegas Detour
While many visitors to Las Vegas depart with lighter wallets, Rory McIlroy’s recent trip to the desert city could prove invaluable ahead of the 88th Masters tournament. Facing a run of middling results by his own high standards, the four-time major champion journeyed west to seek counsel from renowned coach Butch Harmon, the mastermind behind Tiger Woods’s first eight major victories.
McIlroy’s decision to consult Harmon, a man with an impeccable pedigree, was no mere gamble.
“If there’s one guy that I want to go and get a second opinion from, it’s him,”
the Northern Irishman affirmed. The 33-year-old has long enjoyed a fruitful relationship with Harmon, having first met the esteemed coach at the age of 14.
The trip appeared to pay dividends, as McIlroy followed up with a final-round 66 and a third-place finish at the Valero Texas Open the following week, though still nine shots behind the winner, Akshay Bhatia. Arriving at Augusta on Tuesday lunchtime, McIlroy finds himself firmly ranked as the second favorite behind world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler to don the coveted green jacket.
McIlroy’s uncharacteristically late arrival and brief press conference marked a departure from his usual Masters preparations. However, he will take heart from the endorsement of his longtime rival, Tiger Woods, who believes it is only “a matter of time” before the Northern Irishman completes the career Grand Slam by triumphing at Augusta.
While Woods remains bullish about his own chances of a sixth Masters title, the bookmakers are less optimistic, pricing the 47-year-old at 150/1.
In contrast, Scheffler, the defending champion, is the 4/1 favorite to claim a second green jacket in three years following his dominant form this season, which includes winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship.
Defending champion Jon Rahm, despite his controversial move to LIV Golf, will also be a strong contender, having demonstrated his affinity for the hallowed Augusta National course with his triumph last year. The Spaniard will be joined by a host of other major champions, including Brooks Koepka and Wyndham Clark, as well as the highly rated Ludvig Aberg, who will make his Masters debut.
