In a bid to complete the coveted career grand slam, golf superstar Rory McIlroy has sought the expertise of Tiger Woods’ former coach, Butch Harmon. The world number two is making his 10th attempt to win the Masters, the only major championship he is yet to conquer, and secure his place alongside golfing legends Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Woods as the only players to have won all four major titles.

McIlroy, who started the year strongly with a victory at the Dubai Desert Classic in January, has been experiencing some inconsistency in his form on the PGA Tour leading up to this week’s Valero Texas Open. In a recent podcast interview with fellow PGA Tour professional Morgan Hoffmann, the Northern Irishman revealed that he had visited Harmon for a golf lesson the previous week.

“I went last week to see Butch Harmon for a golf lesson,” McIlroy shared. “I’ve seen him over the years, like once every few years I’ll say, ‘Hey, Butch, can I just come see you and you can take a look and see what you think.'”

The four-time major champion’s long-time coach is fellow Northern Irishman Michael Bannon, although he has also worked with Pete Cowen in the past. However, McIlroy’s decision to consult Harmon, a renowned figure in the golfing world, underscores his determination to fine-tune his game as he approaches the Masters.

Interestingly, McIlroy’s daughter Poppy provided him with a piece of advice that resonated with him. “She said, ‘Dada, you already know how to play golf.’ That’s probably the best piece of advice I’ve gotten in the last three years,” the golfer revealed.

As he prepares for the Valero Texas Open and the upcoming Masters, McIlroy will be hoping that his session with Harmon, combined with the wisdom of his young daughter, will help him unlock the key to finally completing the career grand slam and cementing his place among the greats of the game.
