Golf Superstar Rory McIlroy to Reduce Tournament Schedule After Hitting a Wall
Dublin, Georgia – September 4, 2023 – Rory McIlroy, the renowned Northern Irish golfer, has announced plans to play fewer events in the upcoming season after admitting that a hectic 2024 calendar left him “hitting a bit of a wall.”
McIlroy, who is currently ranked 3rd in the world, finished in a tie for 9th place at the recent Tour Championship in Atlanta, his 22nd tournament of the year. Despite this respectable showing, the four-time major champion still has 5 more events left on his schedule before the season concludes.
In addition to his regular PGA Tour outings, the 35-year-old also competed at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, further adding to his demanding schedule. McIlroy believes this intense workload, coupled with a near-miss at the US Open that extended his major drought beyond a decade, has taken a significant toll.
“It’s been a long season,” McIlroy acknowledged after his final-round 66 at East Lake left him 14 shots behind winner Scottie Scheffler. “I’m going to just have to think about trying to build in a few extra breaks here and there next year and going forward because I felt like I hit a bit of a wall sort of post-US Open, and still feel a little bit of that hangover.”
Looking ahead, the Northern Irishman plans to scale back his tournament participation, aiming to compete in approximately 18-20 events per year, down from his typical range of 22. McIlroy believes this adjustment will help him better manage his responsibilities and maintain peak performance throughout the season.
“27 [tournaments] is too many. I’m usually sort of like a 22 sort of person. But again, that was when I was sort of in my 20s and didn’t have the responsibilities that I do now,” he explained.
Despite his fatigue, McIlroy remains committed to the remainder of his 2024 schedule, which includes the prestigious Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews in early October. As he looks ahead to the new season, golf fans can expect to see a more strategically managed calendar from the seasoned superstar.
