Rory McIlroy Closes Gap on Bryson DeChambeau at 2023 WGC Dell Match Play

The 2023 WGC Dell Match Play event saw Rory McIlroy make a strong push in the final round, closing the gap on overnight leader Bryson DeChambeau. Starting the day three shots behind DeChambeau, the Northern Irishman made an ideal start with a birdie on the opening hole, before pulling within a shot when his rival bogeyed the fourth.

Despite an unfortunate dropped shot on the par-five fifth, McIlroy continued to apply pressure, carding a birdie on the ninth hole to further reduce the deficit. Meanwhile, Patrick Cantlay remained just two shots off the lead after narrowly missing a birdie to match McIlroy’s on the ninth.

Earlier in the Day

Earlier in the day, former champion Martin Kaymer provided a glimpse of both the highs and lows possible on the challenging Pinehurst layout. The German carded a closing 73 to finish 13-over par, with four birdies offset by a double-bogey on the ninth and a quadruple-bogey on the 14th.

“I think it’s very fair, I think you can shoot two or three under par,” Kaymer said. “You do have some tricky pins but you know that. You have to play away from flags quite often so you rely on a lot of putts inside 10 feet because you will miss the odd green.”

As the final round unfolded, the focus remained on the battle at the top, with McIlroy hoping to secure a long-awaited fifth major title. Despite DeChambeau maintaining his narrow advantage, the stage was set for a thrilling conclusion to the 2023 WGC Dell Match Play tournament.
