Golf Enthusiast Robert MacIntyre Claims First PGA Tour Victory at RBC Canadian Open
In a thrilling showdown at the RBC Canadian Open, Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre demonstrated his grit and resilience, securing his maiden PGA Tour title. The 26-year-old carded a final-round 68 at Hamilton Golf and Country Club to finish the tournament at 16-under par, narrowly edging out home favorite Ben Griffin by a single shot.
MacIntyre, who had held a four-shot overnight lead, found himself in a precarious position early on as he bogeyed the opening hole while Mackenzie Hughes made a trio of birdies. However, the Ryder Cup star responded emphatically, recording birdies on the 4th, 7th, and 8th holes to regain control of the $7.4 million event.
“Because of this,” MacIntyre gestured to his father, “I’m speechless to be honest. This is just everything for me and family, my girlfriend, my team. I can’t believe I’ve done it with him on the bag.”
Despite a few hiccups, including a wayward tee shot into the water on the 12th hole, MacIntyre maintained his composure. A crucial birdie on the 15th hole proved pivotal, as Griffin mounted a late charge with birdies on the 15th, 16th, and 17th holes to close within one shot. However, Griffin was unable to find a fourth consecutive birdie on the final hole, allowing MacIntyre the luxury of a two-putt for the victory.
