Golf Fans Await Outcome as PGA Tour Negotiations with Saudi Fund Continue

(BBC Golf, April 12th, 2023) – PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan has emphasized his commitment to reaching a deal with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), but acknowledged that “several key issues” remain unresolved in the ongoing negotiations.

The potential merger between the PGA Tour and the PIF-backed LIV Golf circuit has been the subject of intense discussions since last June. While both sides had hoped to finalize an agreement by the end of 2023, that deadline has been pushed back as progress has stalled on certain aspects of the deal.

Despite the delay, Monahan expressed optimism, revealing that he visited Saudi Arabia in January for talks with PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan.

“Our negotiations are accelerating,” he said during a press conference ahead of the 2024 Players Championship. “We still have several key issues to work through, but we have a shared vision to quiet the noise and unlock golf’s worldwide potential.”

The PGA Tour’s recent investment deal with a consortium of American sports team owners, Strategic Sports Group (SSG), has been seen as a potential complicating factor in the negotiations. However, Monahan suggested that this arrangement could actually enhance the prospects of finalizing a deal with the Saudis.

“The conversations with SSG I think have enhanced the likelihood of us reaching a successful conclusion,” Monahan explained. “When you bring in a group of investors in that consortium that combined have over 200 years of managing professional sports franchises in the U.S. and internationally, and you bring in that level of expertise, I think that that is attractive to the PIF.”

As the negotiations continue, golf fans eagerly await the outcome, which Monahan believes could have a significant impact on the future of the sport.

  • “If we don’t negotiate a deal, then I think ultimately we’re back in the same posture that we’re in, and we haven’t unified our game and taken advantage of this unique point in time,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Monahan remains committed to finding a resolution, stating, “I’m focused on trying to see if we can.”
