Tight Race at PGA Championship as Schauffele, Morikawa Share Lead After Round 3

Louisville, KY – May 20, 2023 (Golf Digest)

The PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club is shaping up to be a closely contested affair, with Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa tied for the lead at 15-under-par heading into the final round.

Schauffele, still seeking his first major championship victory, has led after each round so far. However, he now shares the top spot with Morikawa, who is looking to claim his third major title. Schauffele carded a 68 on Saturday, while Morikawa shot a 67 to join him at the summit.

Crowded Leaderboard

“Sahith Theegala is in solo third at 14-under after all three players birdied the 18th hole to conclude their rounds.”

A group of four players, including Shane Lowry (who tied the PGA Championship record with a 62), Bryson DeChambeau, and Viktor Hovland, sit two shots back at 13-under-par.

Further down the leaderboard, European Ryder Cup members Justin Rose and Robert MacIntyre are tied for seventh at 12-under, with Dean Burmester a shot behind them at 11-under. A total of six players are knotted at 10-under-par, ensuring a crowded and thrilling conclusion to the championship.

Struggles for World No. 1

The big storyline of the day, however, was the struggles of world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who shot a 73 to drop into a tie for 24th at 7-under. Scheffler, who has been playing without his regular caddie Ted Scott, carded a double bogey, five bogeys, and five birdies in his third round.

With 18 players within five shots of the lead, the stage is set for an enthralling final round at Valhalla. Schauffele will look to finally secure that elusive first major title, while Morikawa aims to extend his impressive major championship record. Other compelling storylines include Theegala’s quest for a maiden major victory, Lowry’s pursuit of a second major, and the potential for a first English winner of the PGA Championship in 100 years.
