Norgaard Clinches Maiden DP World Tour Title at Betfred British Masters
In a gripping finale at the DP World Tour’s Betfred British Masters, Denmark’s Niklas Norgaard emerged victorious, claiming his maiden tour title in dramatic fashion. The 32-year-old carded a closing round of 72 at the iconic Belfry to finish the tournament at 16 under par, two shots clear of South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence.
Norgaard’s four-shot overnight lead was whittled down to a single stroke after he struggled on the front nine, but the Dane responded with a birdie on the par-three 12th hole, where his playing partner Lawrence missed a short putt. This pivotal two-shot swing gave Norgaard a three-shot cushion, which he extended further with a long-range birdie on the 14th.
However, Norgaard’s composure was tested on the 15th hole, where he endured a disastrous stretch, duffing three consecutive chip shots before eventually carding a double-bogey seven. This cut his lead in half, setting up a tense finale.
“You have no idea how much this means,” an emotional Norgaard said after the round. “I’ve been dreaming of this since I was 10 years old. I’ve had a long career, and this is my first win on the DP World Tour, so it feels very special.”
Lawrence had an opportunity to close the gap further on the 17th, but Norgaard bravely holed a 10-foot birdie putt to remain two shots clear. A par on the 18th hole sealed the victory, making Norgaard the third Danish player to win the prestigious British Masters, following in the footsteps of Thomas Bjorn and Thorbjorn Olesen.
Norgaard’s triumph also sees him take the lead in the early stages of the 2023 Ryder Cup qualifying race, a goal he admitted was on his radar, with his sights set on securing a spot in the season-ending event and cementing his place in the top 50 on the Race to Dubai.
