Keegan Bradley Tapped as Youngest U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Since 1963
The PGA of America announced on Monday that Keegan Bradley will captain the United States Ryder Cup team in 2025 at Bethpage Black, a move that defies precedent. This decision comes after 15-time major champion Tiger Woods passed on the opportunity.
The 38-year-old Bradley will be the youngest U.S. Ryder Cup captain since the legendary Arnold Palmer took on the role in 1963. A two-time Ryder Cup team member, Bradley’s captaincy marks a shift in the team’s leadership strategy, acknowledging the growing youth movement on the PGA Tour.
“My passion and appreciation for golf’s greatest team event have never been stronger,” Bradley said in a statement. “The Ryder Cup is unlike any other competition in our sport, and this edition will undoubtedly be particularly special given the rich history and enthusiastic spectators at this iconic course. I look forward to beginning preparations for 2025.”
Traditionally, U.S. Ryder Cup captains have served as assistants prior to being appointed, forming a de facto “task force” of PGA Tour veterans. However, the PGA of America has deviated from this precedent, selecting Bradley despite his lack of previous captaincy experience.
The decision to appoint Bradley comes after Tiger Woods, considered the heavy favorite for the role, decided not to accept the captaincy for 2025, citing his continued involvement with the PGA Tour and its ongoing negotiations with the Saudi Public Investment Fund.
Ranked 35th in the world, Bradley still has plenty of competitive golf left in him. His passion for the Ryder Cup is well-documented, having played on the U.S. team in 2012 and 2014. The Netflix series “Full Swing” captured Bradley’s disappointment at being left off the 2023 Ryder Cup squad, a decision made by the previous U.S. captain, Zach Johnson.
The PGA of America will hold a news conference with Bradley on Tuesday in New York to discuss his appointment as the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup captain.
