He had been in prime position to end his major drought, leading by two shots with five holes to play, but a pair of late bogeys, including a missed par putt from under four feet, ultimately cost him the championship.
“For him to miss that putt, I’d never wish it on anybody. It just happened to play out that way,” sympathized champion DeChambeau, who scrambled brilliantly on the 18th hole to secure the victory. The scene of a dejected McIlroy leaving Pinehurst stood in stark contrast to the PGA Championship, where runner-up DeChambeau congratulated the winner on the final green.

“Rory has been chasing another major since many years. He is one of the best players in the world, a true champion. It shows you how tough it is,” reflected Frenchman Matthieu Pavon, who finished third, three shots back of DeChambeau. “The more you want it, the tougher it gets, and the highest expectation you have for yourself, the tougher it gets, the more pressure you got into.“
McIlroy’s next opportunity to end his major drought will come at the 2023 Open Championship, scheduled for July 18-21.
