In a recent interview, Greg Norman, the chief executive of the controversial LIV Golf series, has denied reports that they made an offer to Northern Irish golfing star Rory McIlroy. However, Norman suggested that the door remains open for any PGA Tour players interested in joining the Saudi-backed venture.
The four-time major champion McIlroy had been rumored to have received an offer from the breakaway LIV Golf league, but his manager swiftly dismissed these claims as “fake news” following The Masters tournament. Despite being a vocal critic of the LIV project, several top golfers, including Jon Rahm, have already signed up to compete in the series.
While Norman was clear that no formal offer was made to McIlroy, the LIV chief executive expressed a willingness to discuss the opportunity with the 34-year-old should he be interested. “If Rory was willing to sit down and have a conversation with us, would we be happy to sit down with him? One hundred per cent,” Norman stated ahead of the LIV event in Adelaide.
The ongoing tensions between the PGA Tour and the LIV Golf series continue to dominate the headlines in the world of golf. McIlroy is set to rejoin the PGA Tour’s policy board, just five months after stepping down, as negotiations between the two entities over a potential partnership remain ongoing.
Norman acknowledged that he has no insight into the progress of these talks, stating, “I really don’t want to know what’s going on over there because we are so fixated on growing and developing and building out what LIV is today and looking and doing our schedule for 2025 and going into 2026.” The LIV chief’s primary focus remains on further strengthening the profile and reach of his Saudi-backed golf venture.
