Golf Veteran Molinari Pulls Off Stunning Hole-in-One to Make U.S. Open Cut

Veteran Italian golfer Francesco Molinari faced a do-or-die moment on the final hole of his second round at the 2024 U.S. Open on Friday. Heading into the 194-yard, par-3 ninth, the 41-year-old was teetering on the edge of the projected cut line, having carded three bogeys on the back nine.

In a dramatic turn of events, Molinari, the 2018 British Open champion, pulled off an incredible hole-in-one to secure his spot for the weekend. The shot sent the crowd into a frenzy, as Molinari’s perfectly placed 7-iron landed on the left-middle portion of the green and raced towards the hole, just barely making the cut with a projected cut line of 5-over par.

“I think from where we were standing, it looked like it just carried the bunker, plus the greens are getting firm, so it was the ideal shot,” Molinari said. “Then it started tracking, was going to break left to right at the hole, and we were joking with (Sergio Garcia) and how it looked and on a great line the whole way, but what are the chances really.”

The stunning ace marked the third time Molinari has made the cut in nine tournaments so far this year, with his most recent victory coming at the 2019 Arnold Palmer Invitational. Prior to this weekend, Molinari had not made the cut at the U.S. Open since 2021, when he finished tied for 13th.

“It was the last chance to have a chance to play the weekend,” Molinari said, summing up the dramatic moment. “Yeah, that’s golf in a nutshell.”
