Next week’s Players Championship will not feature golfing legend Tiger Woods. The 15-time major champion and two-time winner of the prestigious tournament will be absent from the TPC Sawgrass event in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
Woods’ name was not included on the field list released by the PGA Tour on Friday. The former world number one’s last tournament appearance was at the Genesis Invitational in February, where he withdrew during the second round due to illness. Woods cited potential flu symptoms and dehydration as the reasons for his early exit.
Prior to the Genesis event, the iconic golfer had competed in the Hero World Challenge and PNC Championship in late 2022. His outing at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas marked his first tournament since withdrawing from the Masters in April 2023 because of plantar fasciitis.
During a press conference ahead of the Hero World Challenge, Woods expressed his hope to play in one tournament per month throughout the 2024 season. However, his absence from the upcoming Players Championship suggests that his next appearance will likely be at the Masters in April, the first major of the year.
Woods is the only player to have won both the Masters and the Players Championship in the same calendar year, having triumphed at TPC Sawgrass in 2001 and 2013. His miraculous 60-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole during the 2001 event is considered one of the most iconic shots in the tournament’s history.
The 2023 Players Championship is scheduled to take place from March 14 to 17, with world number one Scottie Scheffler aiming to defend his title.
