Rory McIlroy, the world’s second-ranked golfer, has issued a strong defense of his caddie Harry Diamond following criticism over their near miss at the recent US Open in Pinehurst. Despite the disappointment, the Northern Irishman is determined to bounce back quickly, starting with this week’s Scottish Open.
McIlroy took aim at former Tiger Woods coach Hank Haney, who claimed the golfer would have won at Pinehurst if legendary caddie Steve Williams had been on the bag instead of Diamond. Additionally, former PGA Tour player turned commentator Smylie Kaufman suggested that Diamond “really should have stepped in” before one of McIlroy’s costly mistakes on the 15th hole.
“It’s certainly unfair,” McIlroy remarked. “Hank Haney has never been in that position. Smylie has been in that position once, and I love Smylie, and he was out there with us on 18.”
The four-time major champion went on to defend Diamond’s contributions, stating that just because he is not as vocal as other caddies, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t provide valuable input and support.
Looking ahead, McIlroy is confident in his ability to bounce back from the near miss at the US Open. “I did things on that Sunday that I haven’t been able to do the last couple of years, took control of the golf tournament, held putts when I needed to – well, mostly – made birdies and really got myself in there,” he said.
The 34-year-old also reflected on the crucial moments at Pinehurst, acknowledging the difficulties he faced on the 16th and 18th holes. “I knew I had to hit it really soft. If the one back didn’t matter, I would have hit it firmer,” he explained, referring to his approach shot on the final hole.
As Rory McIlroy prepares for the Open Championship at Troon next week, he remains steadfast in his support for his caddie Harry Diamond and is determined to capitalize on the positives from his recent US Open performance.
