Rory McIlroy’s US Open Heartbreak: Bryson DeChambeau Emerges Victorious
Witness the intense battle at the 2023 US Open as Rory McIlroy’s dreams shatter in a late-round collapse, allowing Bryson DeChambeau to seize victory. Despite the heartbreak, the story is a testament to resilience and sportsmanship in the world of golf.
Golf Enthusiasts Stunned as Rory McIlroy’s US Open Dreams Slip Away
In a heartbreaking turn of events at the 2023 US Open, golfing legend Sir Nick Faldo believes Rory McIlroy will be “haunted forever” by his late-round collapse that allowed Bryson DeChambeau to clinch the title.
McIlroy, the world number three, had fought his way back into contention, carding four birdies in just five holes from the ninth to take a two-shot lead. However, the Northern Irishman’s pursuit of a fifth major championship and first since 2014 unraveled on the closing stretch, as he bogeyed three of the final four holes.
The devastating run included agonizing missed par putts of just two feet, six inches, and three feet, nine inches on the 16th and 18th holes, respectively. This opened the door for DeChambeau, who capitalized with a brilliant par save from the bunker on the last to secure his second US Open triumph.
“That’s going to haunt Rory for the rest of his life, those two misses.”
— Sir Nick Faldo, six-time major winner
Despite the heartbreak, DeChambeau expressed sympathy for his rival, acknowledging the pain of McIlroy’s missed putts. “For him to miss that putt (on 18), I would never wish that on anybody,” DeChambeau said after his final round of 71 left him six under par, one shot ahead of McIlroy and two clear of Patrick Cantlay and Tony Finau.
However, DeChambeau believes the setback will only fuel McIlroy’s determination to add to his major tally. “I think that fire in him is only going to continue to grow. He’s going to win more major championships,” the American predicted.
As golf enthusiasts grapple with the aftermath of this dramatic US Open finale, the sport’s next major, the 152nd Open Championship, is set to tee off at Royal Troon from July 18-21.
