Golf World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler Faces Potential Missed Cut at U.S. Open
World No. 1 and reigning Masters champion Scottie Scheffler struggled in the second round of the 2023 U.S. Open at Pinehurst, shooting a 4-over-par 74 on Friday. Sitting at 5-over-par for the tournament, Scheffler currently finds himself outside the cut line and in danger of missing the weekend at the major championship.
If Scheffler fails to make the cut, it would mark the first time he has missed the cut at a major since the 2022 PGA Championship. According to golf analyst Justin Ray, Friday’s round was the first time Scheffler has recorded a birdie-free round as a professional at a major championship.
The five-time PGA Tour winner in 2022 had two bogeys and one double bogey on his scorecard, losing 3.3 strokes on the greens and ranking 91st in the field in strokes gained: putting.
Scheffler entered the U.S. Open as the betting favorite to win the tournament, but his struggles on the greens and exacting Pinehurst No. 2 layout have put his weekend status in jeopardy. In contrast, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, who shot a 2-over-par 72 in the second round, is in contention at 3-under-par heading into the weekend. Fellow major champion Bryson DeChambeau also fired a 69 on Friday and sits at 4-under-par, well within striking distance.
