Breakthrough Victory Fuels Major Championship Ambitions for Robert MacIntyre

After securing his first PGA Tour win at the RBC Canadian Open, rising Scottish golfer Robert MacIntyre has set his sights on major championship glory. The emotional victory, which saw MacIntyre’s father Dougie step in as his caddie at the last minute, has earned him a coveted spot in next year’s Masters and the upcoming US Open.

Despite his excitement over these major tournament opportunities, MacIntyre admits he is “gutted” to be missing Scotland’s Euro 2024 campaign. “I’ll take what I’m given, but I’m sure the people walking around will keep me updated with what’s going on if I’m on the golf course,” he said. “Hopefully the boys can pull one off and get a win over them.”

The Ryder Cup winner, who has played in 13 major championships so far with just one missed cut, believes he has been making significant strides in the mental aspect of his game. His share of eighth place in the recent US PGA Championship marked his third top-10 major finish.

“I’ve been working hard on the mental side of the game,” MacIntyre explained. “It’s difficult to win golf tournaments. It’s even harder to win majors, but you’ve got to be in it to win it and this [win in Canada] was a big step in in my career.”

While the odds were stacked against him in the final round at Valhalla, MacIntyre remained focused and ultimately capped off his week in style with an eagle on the par-five 18th hole. “It was massive,” he said. “I stayed in the fight. I was getting annoyed, but I didn’t change the process of what I was doing, didn’t change the game plan and then I got my reward on the 18th.”

As he prepares for the upcoming US Open, MacIntyre is determined to approach the major tournament with a level head. “The US Open is a major, a massive event, but I need to try to treat it as another golf tournament,” he said. “There’s going to be golf tournaments in the future that I’m going to go mental at because we’re humans and we’re not perfect all the time, but it’s about recognizing that you’re falling off the path of staying calm and get yourself back on there as quick as you can.”

With his breakthrough victory and renewed focus, MacIntyre is well on his way to fulfilling his major championship ambitions, even if it means missing out on the excitement of Scotland’s Euro 2024 campaign.
