The final round of the 2024 RBC Canadian Open witnessed an unexpected series of events as Mike “Fluff” Cowan, the trusted caddie for Taiwanese golfer C.T. Pan, took a fall at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club. This incident forced Cowan, a widely respected figure on the PGA Tour, to exit the course, leading to a unique caddie swap for Pan to complete the round.
The first replacement came from an unlikely source – a fan from the gallery, Paul Emerson, who slipped under the ropes, donned a caddie bib, and grabbed Pan’s bag. Emerson carried the bag for holes five through nine, before being relieved by Michael Campbell, a member of the PGA Tour’s caddie services team.
As the group made the turn, Al Riddell, the regular caddie for PGA Tour golfer Paul Barjon, arrived on the scene and took over for the remainder of the round, becoming the fourth caddie for Pan on the day.
“Cowan, 76, is a veteran in the sport, having caddied for Jim Furyk from 1999 to 2024 and even Tiger Woods during his historic 1997 Masters triumph. He had only recently started working with Pan full-time in May of this year.”
Despite the unusual circumstances, Pan, 32, managed to maintain his composure and focus, drawing on the support of the impromptu caddies to navigate the final holes. The Taiwanese golfer has one PGA Tour victory to his name, having won the 2019 RBC Heritage.
Cowan is expected to be fine after the fall, and the golf community will undoubtedly be eager to see him back on the bag, working alongside Pan as the pair continue their partnership on the tour.
