Bryson DeChambeau, golf’s enigmatic “mad scientist,” put on a dazzling display of skill and showmanship during the final round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club. Despite falling just short of the title, DeChambeau’s fearless and spirited performance left the Kentucky crowd thoroughly entertained.
The sorcery began on the sixth hole, where DeChambeau confidently putted through the thick zoysia grass to drain a long-range birdie, celebrating with a full-circle sprint around his caddie. The heroics continued on the 10th, as he muscled a 6-iron 248 yards to set up a birdie on the par-5. The charge peaked on the 16th, where DeChambeau thanked a friendly tree for depositing his wayward drive into the fairway, then proceeded to stick his approach to within three feet of the cup.
“I gave it my all,” DeChambeau said. “I put as much effort as I possibly could into it and I knew that my B game would be enough. It’s just clearly somebody played incredibly well.”
DeChambeau’s final birdie on the 18th hole tied him with eventual champion Xander Schauffele at 20-under par, briefly breaking the major championship scoring record. The 8-time PGA Tour winner then bolted to the range, determined to stay loose for a potential playoff, never taking more than 15 seconds between shots.
The crowd at Valhalla was captivated by DeChambeau’s infectious energy and showmanship, from the booming drives to the fist-pumping celebrations. “YouTube has helped me understand that a little bit more,” he said. “When the moment comes, knowing what to do, what to say, how to act is really important. You know, when I was younger I didn’t understand what it was. Now I’m doing it a lot more for the fans and for the people around and trying to be a bit of an entertainer that plays good golf every once in a while.”
While DeChambeau’s efforts ultimately fell short, his performance left a lasting impression on the golf fans in Louisville.
