Xander Schauffele Takes One-Shot Lead at 106th US PGA Championship
Reigning Olympic Champion Maintains Momentum
Xander Schauffele, the reigning Olympic champion, has positioned himself atop the leaderboard after the second round of the 106th US PGA Championship at Valhalla. Schauffele added a sterling 68 to his record-tying opening 62, reaching a tournament-leading 12-under-par total and matching the championship scoring record in relation to par set by Brooks Koepka in 2019.
Morikawa and Theegala in Close Pursuit
Close on Schauffele’s heels is former champion Collin Morikawa, who carded a superb 65 to sit just one shot off the pace. Sahith Theegala occupies solo third, a further stroke back, while world number one Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau are part of a group tied for fourth at 9-under.

Scheffler’s Off-Course Incident
Remarkably, Scheffler’s 66 came just hours after being arrested and subsequently released from police custody following an off-course incident. The reigning Masters champion had attempted to access the course amid heavy traffic caused by an earlier unrelated accident, in which a male pedestrian tragically lost his life after being struck by a shuttle bus. Scheffler now faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals.
Detry Impresses with Flawless 67
Belgium’s Thomas Detry is three shots off the lead after a flawless 67, which included two birdies and an eagle on the par-5 18th hole. Detry was pleased with his execution, particularly on the closing stretch, and felt he had found some redemption after narrowly missing a short putt on the 17th.
The fatal accident resulted in an 80-minute delay to all tee times, with 18 players unable to complete their second rounds before darkness fell. Despite the setback, Morikawa remains upbeat, acknowledging the disappointment of his previous major performances while expressing excitement for the challenges that lie ahead.
