Golf Prodigy Miles Russell Shines at LECOM Suncoast Classic, Secures T20 Finish
Fifteen-year-old golfing sensation Miles Russell made waves at the recent Korn Ferry Tour’s LECOM Suncoast Classic, rising as high as a tie for third place before ultimately finishing in a 10-way tie for 20th.
The left-handed Russell, who is just 15 years, five months and 19 days old, became the youngest player to make the cut in a Korn Ferry Tour event after solid opening rounds of 68 and 66, including an impressive front-nine 31 on Thursday. He followed that up with a 70 on Saturday, well within his stated goal of a top-25 finish in his first professional start, which he secured on a sponsor exemption.
Russell’s final-round 66 saw him reach 14-under-par for the week at Lakewood National in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. He made a late surge, picking up 6 birdies, 1 par, and 1 bogey over the final 10 holes, before a closing bogey on the 18th left him tied for 15th as he walked off the course.
“With his top-25 result, the talented teenager has now automatically qualified for next week’s Veritex Bank Championship in Arlington, Texas.”
Russell and Guan Tian Liang remain the only players younger than 16 to make the cut in a PGA Tour or Korn Ferry Tour event.
The Prodigy’s Impressive Resume
The prodigy from Jacksonville Beach, Florida, who is a high school freshman, has already made a name for himself, breaking one of Tiger Woods’ records last year by becoming the youngest player to be named the AJGA Player of the Year. He has also won the Junior PGA and Junior Players Championship events, with a standout 66 at TPC Sawgrass in the latter.
Russell, who began playing golf at the age of 2 and broke par by 6, has also been granted a sponsor exemption into the PGA Tour’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship in November. In the meantime, he plans to continue competing in AJGA events and elite amateur tournaments.
The young golfer’s impressive performance and record-breaking achievements have drawn praise from the likes of Phil Mickelson, who commended the fellow left-handed player on “playing such incredible golf.”
